Colorado became the thirty-eighth state on August 1, 1876 twenty-eight days after the centennial year (anniversary) of the United States Declaration of Independance. U.S. president, Ulysses S. Grant (18th president) signed a proclamation (document) admitting the state of Colorado to the union as the thirty-eighth state and earning the "Centennial State" as the new nickname.
