Mountain of the Holy Cross

This view of the Mountain of the Holy Cross near Vail, Colorado. The mountiain reaches up to about 14,000 feet, and has 2 clefts that intersect at right angles; when the snow melt each spring, the clefts remained filled with snow , creating a white cross that is visible for many miles. The Mountain or the Holy Cross is in the Sawatch Range, part of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. It's located in the Holy Cross Wilderness near the ghost town of Holy Cross City and in Eagle County. The mountian was under USDA Forest Service administration, it was proclaimed "Holy Cross National Monument" by Herbert Hoover on May 11, 1929. The monument was transferred to the National Park Service in 1933. In 1950, it was returned to the Forest Service and lost its National Monument status.
